Our journey begins with a course during the spring term that will prepare you for the upcoming immersive travel course to London, England.
Through readings and discussion, we will explore the history of medicine, psychiatry, and psychology; read excerpts from the works of Freud, early reformers, humanist psychologists, and key figures from the anti-psychiatry movement; explore the areas of forensic psychology, behavioral science, and consumer psychology; and examine issues concerned with using Western perspectives of treatment in a global context.
Next, we travel to London, England, one of the top 10 multicultural cities in the world, with over 200 languages spoken, and home of three of the top 10 museums of the world. This immersive 10-12 day experience includes visits to important locations designed to increase your understanding of psychology (e.g., Bethlem Hospital, Freud’s home, Royal Society of Medicine), explore the history of London (e.g., Buckingham Palace, Tower of London), and experience the amazing arts and culture available (e.g., Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, Tate Modern).
In addition to our scheduled events as a larger group, there will have time to explore the city in small groups while working on your photovoice project. These visual images, along with your analysis, will be shared or displayed on campus in the early fall as a way to introduce peers not only to London but also important social, historical, and cultural topics that you chose to observe.
